East Caicos; caving, camping, exploring...
-
East Caicos is only large island that remains uninhabited in the Turks and Caicos.
-
There are some extensive cave systems on the island that can be found in the interior along an old donkey railway. They were mined for guano over 100 years ago and rarely visited since.
-
Expect to get dirty, sweaty, and tired as you explore some the array of large rooms, tight passages, and secret entrances scattered throughout the caves.
-
A reasonable level of fitness and agility are required for both the caves and trails.
-
Look out for a large owl that guards the mouth of one of the caves today and find some rare shrimp hiding in lightless pools deep in the interior.
-
The final cave along the trail is an impressively large chamber filled with crystal clear cold water. You will have to bring your mask and snorkel to discover what is at the back of this cave!!
-
Day trips can be made from Middle Caicos and there is a fantastic beach to camp on near the Jacksonville ruins at the west end of the island.
-
Reach East Caicos by motorboat or kayak and explore the beaches, ruins, and neighbouring island of Joe Grant Cay.
-
Find an old anchor and canon discarded from ships that visited here an age ago.
